October 6, 2013 (CBSCHICAGO) – Police in Mundelein have arrested a 28-year-old man from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood in the brief abduction Monday of a three-year-old girl.
Police had a detailed description, thanks to the girl’s nine-year-old sister, another resident of the building on the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive and witnesses who said they saw Jose E. Reyes, of the 4900 block of West North Avenue, give candy to children in the area in the day or two preceding the abduction.
Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther said a security camera set up by a neighbor of the girl whose car had been burglarized captured Reyes’ 2007 Hyundai Accent entering and leaving the parking lot. The vehicle had distinctive wheel covers, badging and antenna.
Before meeting with reporters, Guenther spoke with the child and her mother; he said they were relieved.
Guenther said police arrested Reyes at work near Mundelein. He has an arrest record that includes assault and burglary charges, although Guenther could not say if Reyes had any convictions.
A judge in Waukegan set bond at $5 million.
