Black Suspect, Chip Washington; Sexually Assaults and Rapes Special-Ed Girl.

August 16, 2013 Memphis Tennessee (WMC-TV) – A 16-year-old is in custody related to a rape at East High School.

An 18-year-old female student complained of stomach pain, then told school officials that a 16-year-old boy raped her at the school.

The staff then called the Sheriff’s Department.

“He was brought down to the Criminal Justice Center by our detectives. Actually both individuals were questioned and with the information that was gathered, it was sent to the District Attorney General’s office for determination. They made determination there was enough evidence for a charge and that charge was rape,” Chip Washington, who is with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, said.

Also according to the Sheriff’s Office, “After questioning, the suspect was transported to the CJC and was charged with rape per the DA’s Office. The 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and is now at Juvenile Court.”

According to an affidavit, the victim was a special education student who had been sent out of her classroom because she had food.

She went to a stairwell to eat, and then the 16-year-old forced her down the stairs, pushed her to the ground and locked the door.

The affidavit states the girl was raped, slapped and dragged on the floor, before a friend missed her in class and went to find her.

The friend heard her screams and went for help.

Darious Pride, who graduated from East High three years ago, said he can’t believe it.

“I was shocked. It’s been a long time since I heard of anything like that happening at East. I haven’t heard anything like that happening at East period, ” Pride said.

It’s not the first sexual assault claim involving East High.

A few years ago, a female student said she was gang raped in a neighborhood off school property.

All the students involved in that case apparently got past school security and left campus.

This latest rape allegation has some again asking, “Where was security?”

“I am like how did that happen though. That’s crazy. I don’t understand that. Where were the security guards?” Mykita Worthy, a parent who lives near East High, said. “I have a daughter coming up and I am like if she gotta go to school out here. I don’t want her to go to school out here. If you can’t feel protected at school, where can you feel protected at?”

Shelby County School officials released a statement saying they take the allegations and report very seriously.

Deputies are in charge of the investigation because of an agreement between county schools and the sheriff’s office.

The 16-year-old suspect is being detained in juvenile.
